design of products and place

I joke that the Interior Design degree I got in the eighties at Michigan State University was the first Design Thinking degree, long before Stanford and IDEO took this ‘new’ approach to product design and coined the now popular term. The process is the same. Create a Design Brief. Answer the question, What if? Explore the territory from every angle, most importantly the experience of the humans in the middle. Gain insights and empathy with the pains and gains the users want to address (even if they can’t articulate it). Ideate, asking over and over, How Might We? Experiment actively with prototypes, sketches, drawings, models, even acting it out with the users for feedback until the answer is YES!

Build beauty.

Below are some of the artifacts from over the years of designing places for people to thrive. I always always keep place in mind, no matter what I am designing or creating.
